On May 2, 2020 New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham closed all roads going in and out of the city of Gallup, New Mexico after it became a COVID-19 hotspot. Only residents were allowed to enter the city. Gallup was the only city in the country that was shut down amidst the pandemic of 2020.
Grisham attempted to do the same in Grants, New Mexico, which is 62 miles west of Gallup but the Mayor Martin “Modey” Hick of Grants would not have any of it. Mayor Hicks went on to say: “I think the governor has overblown this. This panic is caused by the government.”
